Orientation refers to both Sexual and Romantic Orientation. "Sexual orientation, (...)refers to a person's sexual attractions (or lack thereof) toward other people. It is not defined by sexual activity, which can be independent of a person's orientation. It also is not equivalent to a person's gender, but the most common terms use the language of the gender binary (male or female)." Related terms: *Heterosexual: Sexual, emotional and/or romantic attraction to a sex other than one’s own. *Homosexual: Person who is attracted to someone of the same sex. *Bisexual:Women or men who are attracted to both sexes, female and male. *Asexual: Someone who does not experience sexual attraction or an intrinsic desire to have sexual relationships (or the adjective describing a person as such). *Pansexual: Bisexual, Pansexual, or Omnisexual are terms used to by some to self-identitify that they are attracted to and may form sexual and romantic relationships with someone regardless of that person's gender-identity or genitalia. "Romantic orientation is a term that originates with asexual communities. It is related to a person's romantic attractions or desires, whereas sexual orientation is associated with sexual attractions. Romantic orientation is generally expressed in terms of which gender or genders a person is attracted to in relation to the person's own. These terms usually end in the suffix "-romantic".Romantic orientations are most often referred to in asexual communities, but they are not exclusive to asexual people. Although a person's sexual and romantic attractions are usually implied by the same word used for their sexual orientation, a person's romantic and sexual orientation may differ. The Split Attraction Model is sometimes used to convey these differences." Related terms: Heteroromantic: person who is romantically attracted to a different gender Homoromantic: person who is romantically attracted by the same gender Biromantic: person who is romantically attracted to both genders of the binary man/women Panromantic: person who is romantically attracted to different people regardless of their gender identity Aromantic: person who doesn’t experience romantic attraction. The following terms refer to both sexual and romantic orientation: *Gay: describes a man whose enduring physical, romantic and/or emotional attraction is to other men, although the term can be used to describe both gay men and lesbians. *Lesbian:Woman who is attracted to other women. Umbrella terms: *Queer: All individuals who fall outside of the gender and sexuality ‘norms’. - (N.B. Queer is an umbrella term that refers to the whole gender spectrum, not only to orientation) *LGBTQIA+ people are people: who are attracted to others of their own gender (lesbian, gay) or any gender (bisexual); whose gender identity and/or expression does not correspond to the sex they were assigned at birth (trans, non-binary); whose identity does not fit into a binary classification of sexuality and/or gender (queer); anyone who hasn't yet self-defined their sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression (questionning); who are born with sex characteristics that do not fit the typical definition of male or female (intersex); those who experience little to no sexual attraction (asexual) or little to no romantic attraction (aromantic). The Rights and Justice Unit prefers to use the term LGBTQIA+, the “+” representing all the terms which are evolving continuously so as to be respectful of all gender identities. N. B. Gender identity, gender expression, biological sex, and sexual orientation are independent of one another (i.e., they are not connected). People’s sexual orientation doesn’t determine their gender expression. And their gender expression isn’t determined by their gender identity. And their gender identity isn’t determined by their biological sex. Those things certainly affect one another (i.e., they are related to one another) but they do not determine one another.
